Making Art Together is the New Quality Time

You can create art.

Even if you draw a line and a circle on a piece of paper, that's art.

What makes that line and circle even more special is creating those shapes with your child or any loved one right next to you.

That line and circle become a precious memory when it's done with someone you love.

The beauty of making art is making art with someone you love.

I recently bought one of those adult coloring books with flowers.

I bought it to learn how to draw flowers.

So one evening my youngest daughter and I were watercoloring.  I looked over at her watercoloring and thought hey why don't I do the same thing (that she is doing).

She simply made watercolored lines.  I loved it.

My lines ended up more of a blotch.

We let the watercoloring pictures dry overnight.

The next day I used a sharpie and drew a poppy over the dried watercolor blotch that I made.

Turned out to be pretty unique.

I used PicMonkey to add a little more uniqueness to it!

What have you made lately?

Let me know in the comment section below.

Make Art After Church

Hey Everyone!

Can you believe tomorrow is September?

Time waits for no one.

...and time has flown by this year.

Today for this post, I want to share with you one of the activities that I sometimes do after church.

One of the things that I used to do with my daughters after church when they were younger was to bring their little sketch pads and colored pencils to a local park.  We would sit on a blanket and draw whatever we saw in nature.

And recently, we took our youngest (the last in the nest) to a nearby lake after church and we water colored.

Yep, we water colored our view.

Just a little simple relaxation thing that we do after church sometimes.

Do you have any after church activities that you do or that you do with your family and children?

Let me know in the comment section below!

A Quiet Space in your Home

You should create a quiet space to know God.

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
-Psalm 46:10

This world can pretty much drown out any knowledge of the Holy.

Every day is a gift from God.

A quiet place reassures you that He lives.  A quiet place also reassures you that God cares about you personally.

You can create a quiet space anywhere in your home.  Whether you live in an apartment, studio or living with a relative, creating a space of solitude can be rejuvenation for your life.

Here are a few ways to create simple quiet spaces:

1.  Your night table can serve as a quiet space right next to your bed.  .You could simply add a Bible and a few inspirational books as well as pen and paper for notes.  When you awake in the morning, you are already in your quiet space!

2. Your patio can also serve as a quiet space.  Nature is a wonderful place to be when you want to get quiet and a patio is usually outside.  Adding a few plants and a small table for your Bible and a few books will lend to a peaceful place.

3.  A chair in the den can also serve as a quiet space.  The thing about using a family den is getting in the space early in the morning before anyone else gets up.

4.  The breakfast table or the dining room can also be used as a place to retreat to to have a few moments of solitude.

5.  Dad or mom's office can turn into a quiet space. Sometimes the family office works as a good quiet space...you just have to turn off all the computers and gadgets and stuff.

And here are a few verses to encourage you to seek the Lord and gain a knowledge of the Holy:

And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord,...-2 Chronicles 20:3

And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee. -Psalm 9:10

The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. -Psalm 14:2

When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek. -Psalm 27:8

When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek. -Psalm 27:8

As Christians, Christ leaves us this example from His own life in the book of Mark:

And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.- Mark 1:35

What's that in your hand?

What's that in your hand Moses?

I said "what's that in your hand Moses?"

Those two sentences (questions) come from a song that my aunt used to sing all the time.

After singing the song, she would look at me and say "What's that in your hand Tonya?"

Fast forward a few years later and I am sitting in church.

The preacher says something like "God can use whatever you have in your hand. What's in your hand?"

When he said those words, I was holding a red pen.  I thought "What can God do with that?"

Shortly after I heard that sermon, I started teaching PreK and creating all kinds of art for bulletin boards and day to day activities for my children in class.

Sometimes, I would think back on that sermon and the red pen and say to myself "Wow, God used the red pen."

That red pen symbolized using ink and paper to me.

Fast forward a few more years and here I am blogging about all things that involve using your hands creatively with pen, paper and paint.

Who knew?

I never would have imagined.

What's in your hand dear reader?

Whatever it is someone needs your gift to help lighten the heavy load of life.

And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The Lord hath not appeared unto thee. And the Lord said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. -Exodus 4:1-2

Rest

I said, Lord, be merciful unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee. Psalm 41:4

Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me. -Psalm 56:1

Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast. -Psalm 57:1

Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.-Psalm 86:3

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. -Psalm 103:8

Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful. -Psalm 116:5

For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever. Praise ye the Lord- Psalm 117:2

5 uses for those little notebooks that you see at the store

How are you doing? Good, I hope.

Do you ever see those miniature notebooks at the store?  They are located in the stationery section.

I pick them up all the time at Dollar General.  Shout out to Dollar General for making pretty notebooks under three bucks.

And shout out to all the craft stores that have the dollar bin with cool cute little notebooks too!

I love little notebooks.
I have so many that have been filled in with schedules, things to do lists and goals and visions and inspirational quotes and bible verses.

I keep saying that one day I am going to compile all of them and make a book out of them.

From my quiet time with the Lord in the morning, I will write out a scripture (from the Bible) at the top of the days to do list (in the little notebook).

Also one of the little notebooks that I have has quotes from a successful businessman's book.  Each day that I read his book I would write something encouraging that he said.

I am going to make some little notebooks one day and sell them.

Anyway, if you ever wonder what could you possibly put in a little notebook, I have that all worked out for you.  I list five cool things that you can do today in your little notebook.

Oh and I decided to post some photos from my Instagram over the past year throughout this post of  my collection of little notebooks . ...yeah, it's kinda serious this thing with little notebooks.

So here it goes:

1. Things to do list - All kinds of Lists
Write out your things to do lists in little notebooks.  Little notebooks slip easily into your purse and are easy to carry around the grocery store.

They are also great (and small enough) for checking off stuff as you complete it.  And if you have to write out a bunch of thank you notes, you can make your list of names and check each person off the list as you complete each persons card.

2. Write down scriptures.
Sometimes at the top of my things to do list, I will write a scripture that I found in the Bible that morning.  As I check my list for what's next, I will see the verse and can start the process of committing this verse to memory.

I also jot down the verse on its own page sometimes putting up to five or six verses on the page depending on how large or how small that I write that day.

3. Write down business inspiration.
There is so much business information and inspiration out there that it is good to have one place that you can make a quick reference to when needed.

And that is where the little notebook comes in, just jot down the inspiration in your little notebook and slip it into your purse and refer to as needed.

4. Goals - Write your goals in a little notebook
Using your little notebook to write down your goals is like having a pocket sized vision board.  Look at it like you are carrying your vision board with you.

Write your goals down.

Remember that you can have a goal for your house or yourself. ...like your goal could be to wash all the bathroom rugs in the house on Tuesday.  Writing down that simple goal will help you to remember when Tuesday rolls around to wash up those rugs.

When I started Brown Sack Crochet, I bought a little notebook for all my crochet goals and notes. You can see the actual post here.

5. Doodles
So like who doesn't love to doodle? Everyone needs a little notebook to doodle.

Doodling is good therapy.  It is a focused creative art form.  Doodle hearts and flowers and stuff.

Practice faux calligraphy in a little notebook.  I tell you how to do faux calligraphy here.

And shout out to Ashley for the stock photo.  Apparently she likes little notebooks too!

I use little notebooks because I like to write with pen and paper.

What about you?  Do you like to use pen and paper? Let me know in the comment section below.
