Colors in the Bible - Black

So today, I am going to share some things that I found about the color black.

Let me just start with this verse here:

Song of Solomon 5:11 His head is as the most fine gold, his locks are bushy, and black as a raven.

I am like "OMgoodness! This is me!!!"

My hair is bushy and black.  Who knew?  I mean who knew that this verse was in the Bible?  I certainly didn't.

But I am lovin' it (the verse)!

Here are a few other verses in the Bible mentioning the color black:

I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon. -Song of Solomon 1:5

Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother's children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept. -Song of Solomon 1:6

My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat. -Job 30:30

Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble -Esther 1:6

But if the scall be in his sight at a stay, and that there is black hair grown up therein; the scall is healed, he is clean: and the priest shall pronounce him clean. -Leviticus 13:37

My thoughts:  I had my own thoughts about Song of Solomon 1:5 but yesterday I learned that that is a woman talking and not Solomon.  So I removed that part of this post. But that verse does make me think of this quote by Martin Luther King, Jr.:

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

Natural objects referenced as black include hair, marble, skin, the sky, the sun and the sun and moon together (Matthew 5:36, Leviticus 13:31, Esther 1:6, Job 30:30, 1Kings 18:45, Proverbs 7:9, Revelation 6:12, Joel 2:10). found here

In many verses it obvious that black refers to mourning, gloom and sorrow as well as judgment and other woeful stuff.  But we have to remember that those are symbolisms or descriptive things.

Tomorrow (Lord willing) I will post on the color purple. -no pun intended
